Cooling Mattress: Keep You Cool All Night

What Is a Cooling Mattress? The Truth About Cooling Mattress Technology

Have you ever noticed that there's a lot of cooling mattresses out there these days? Just about everybody says they've got a cooling mattress, and I will tell you that consumer research says that cooling is almost the number one reason why consumers want a mattress today.

So let's talk about what is a cooling mattress and what is not a cooling mattress.

What Actually Makes a Mattress Cooler?

The simple fact is there's two things that make a mattress cooler.

1. Airflow

That's what forever and ever the mattress industry has tried to improve.

They try to make the cell structure. The cell structure is the part of the mattress that's made out of millions of little bubbles, and they try to make that cell structure more breathable so air passes through the cell structure.

What that does is make it so as air passes through it, the heat that's coming off our body has a place to go and escape throughout the mattress.

Now that's probably the most basic type of cooling in a mattress.

2. Phase Change Material (PCM)

Really what has changed the industry and made mattresses truly cooler is what's called Phase Change Material.

We call it PCM, but Phase Change Material is a chemical, if you will, and it's a really dynamic chemical.

It's been around for quite a while.

It was developed by NASA, and NASA developed it for spacesuits to help the astronauts both stay cooler and stay warmer.

What Phase Change Material does is try to keep your body at a certain degrees on your outside temperature so that you can sleep more comfortably.

So that's what the Phase Change Material is all about.

Are Gel Memory Foam Mattresses Really Cooling?

So let's talk about some of the mattresses that are out there that say that they're cooling.

If you look at an online mattress, for example, and it says it's got a cooling mattress, it probably says it has gel memory foam.

Gel memory foam is a good product. Don't get me wrong.

It actually has some great properties for pressure relief.

But for cooling, it really doesn't do much.

The gel actually helps the structure.

Remember how we talked about the cell structure?

It does help that be more durable, so it definitely has some value to it.

But it really is not cooling.

It might be cool to the touch, so just as you touch something it might be cool.

But the time your body temperature touches it, it warms it up to that body temperature.

From that point forward, it really doesn't do any cooling.

What About Air Cool Memory Foam?

The other thing that you'll see is one of the brands out there is called Air Cool Memory Foam.

Now that does have some great properties in the fact that it has that bigger cell structure.

It allows a lot of air to go through it, so it does do some cooling.

But without the Phase Change Material, it still can't keep you cool throughout the night.

Which Mattresses Truly Keep You Cool All Night?

There's really only a couple of beds out there that truly, truly keep you cool at night.

In my opinion, but I'm very well versed on the fact that the Tempur-Pedic Breeze is one of the best mattresses out there for keeping you cool.

It has a lot of Phase Change Material in it.

They put it in the cover, which helps keep you cooler.

They put it in between the cover and the memory foam that they use in it.

That really makes a big difference in how cool you are as you go to sleep.

Why Staying Cool Helps You Sleep Better

So I'm going to talk about that for just a second.

As you go to sleep, what you want is your body temperature to stay cooler.

It's been proven that a cooler body temperature will help you go to sleep faster.

The Tempur-Pedic ProAdapt, for example, will help keep you cooler as you go to sleep.

But it won't keep you cooler all night long.

The Tempur-Pedic Breeze is really the first mattress out there that helped you stay asleep longer and made you get into deeper REM sleep because it allowed you to stay cooler all night long.

Serta Arctic: A New Cooling Mattress

There's another mattress now on the market called the Serta Arctic.

It's a brand new mattress.

If you haven't seen it, you ought to check it out if you like cooling mattresses.

The Serta Arctic is a really, really impressive product in the fact that it's even cooler.

It's been proven, and there's tests, and they're advertising the fact that it will keep you even cooler throughout the night than the Tempur-Pedic Breeze.

It's really, really unique in the fact that they've actually taken some of these PCMs and put them inside the memory foam in the mattress.

I believe this is the first company that's really tried to do this outside of Serta iComfort, which has put PCMs inside little gel beads.

That has really helped keep the iComforts cooler, but not to the level that the Tempur-Pedic Breeze and the Serta Arctic have.

Other Cooling Mattresses Worth Considering

There's other brands out there that have some really good mattresses that are cooling too.

Sealy has a couple of mattresses in their hybrid line that are really cooling mattresses.

Beautyrest has some hybrids and their Beautyrest Black mattresses that have some great cooling features in the top layers of their mattress.

But between the Tempur-Pedic and this new Serta Arctic, they're really the only companies that have taken it to the next level.

They've made it so that the cooling features of a mattress last all night long.

Everybody else just really will help you go to sleep faster, which is a great thing.

But it may not keep you asleep and get you into that deep REM sleep that you need.

Cooling mattresses have become one of the biggest trends in the mattress industry because consumers increasingly want a cooler sleeping experience.

While many mattresses advertise cooling features, not all cooling technologies perform the same. Airflow and breathable foam can help reduce heat initially, but Phase Change Material (PCM) is what truly helps regulate body temperature throughout the night.

According to this discussion, mattresses like the Tempur-Pedic Breeze and the Serta Arctic stand out because they use advanced PCM technology that keeps sleepers cooler for longer, helping promote deeper, more comfortable sleep.
